For Your Consideration: A Time Agnostic Music Contextualization Effort
To borrow from our very own homepage,
When writing about a song or album, the convention is to use the present tense. A piece of music, although representative of and influenced by the era in which it was created, is ultimately always experienced in ~the present~. We built this website while pondering ways that we could, at every turn, focus on discovery by bringing music we released years ago relevantly back into the present, challenging how we collectively talk and think about “new” music. Discovering new music is exciting, but so is discovering music that’s simply
new
to
you.
As an independent record label, our main focus is curation. What we choose to release is intentional. Over time though, it can get pretty hard to sift through the catalog of a single label, never mind hundreds or thousands of them. It gets noisy pretty fast out there!

It's a constant challenge to promote music in our current music ecosystem. Digital service providers focus on what they can push right! now!, press cycles and album releases revolve around language like "campaign" and "rollout" and "content" and "engagement". Old Music Friday just doesn't really hit. Feeding the machine can be maddening and the algorithm generally only has an appetite for anything that's +/- a month or so old, at most. Music doesn't stop mattering just because time marches (scrolls?) on forever, creating an endless stream of New Content™ though. We all know this, and yet, this new music consumption landscape persists.

Occasionally, we like to pause and consider ways we can contextualize the music we've released over the years, resurfacing hidden gems, putting together samplers, making thoughtful recommendations, and now, as we celebrate our 19th birthday this week: pairing sonically similar releases from our catalog in a time-agnostic way. Whether you're here for the old stuff and looking for something new, or here for the new stuff and looking for something *ahem*,
new to you,
we hope you find something to enjoy all the same. Click on any album title below to load a page with links to hear it on each of the major streaming services so you can listen where you prefer. Enjoy!
