standards // Debut full-length 'Fruit Island' out today
We are so excited to be sharing the new debut album from our resident fruity duo standards.
For those of you who aren't already familiar with the band, Standards is a two-piece math rock band fronted by guitarist Marcos Mena and featuring drummer Forrest Rice (mem. Covet). Their "fruity" melodies and technical musicianship have earned them somewhat of a cult following over the years, lauded for their uniquely danceable brand of complex instrumental rock.
You can find the band (and their characteristic guitar videos) on Youtube, Instagram, and Twitter.
We recommend taking their tunes for a spin if you're a fan of CHON, Minus the Bear, American Football, Covet, TTNG, toe, Ghosts or Vodka. (We also recommend giving this album a listen in general!)
Fruit Island is a bright album teeming with technical, yet fun tracks, guaranteed to make you smile like the fruity friends on the album cover. Led by the exuberant melodies of Marcos' cross-tapping guitar, the album deftly retools math-rock's unforgiving, challenging tendencies into a style that is both danceable and compositionally profound. Forrest's boisterous drum chops complement the unpredictable melodies, grounding the unusual self-dueling riffs and balancing the bright compositions with tasteful fills and immaculate syncopations. Despite being strictly instrumental, the band’s technical and precise stylings are always catchy and singable, inviting listeners to join the band's dancing fruit mascots whose colorful personalities reflect the music's upbeat nature.
You can find Fruit Island out now on all platforms, as well as purchase a copy on CD. Cassettes and vinyl are currently SOLD OUT in our shop, but we are planning re-stocks and re-presses soon (thanks y'all). (Please note that due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, we are experiencing longer manufacturing and shipping delays than ever before, you can check updated shipping notes on product pages.)
